DRIVEWAYS FAQS

What is the best type of driveway?

Depending on your requirements and budget will determine which kind of driveway is best for your property. There are many factors to consider concerning material from block paving which has a great aesthetic appeal or a tarmac driveway which is cost-effective and durable, we’re driven by you. All driveways are personal but our professional and expert team are always on hand to provide guidance on which option is best.

Do you need planning permission for a new driveway?

As with any additions or amendments to your home, it’s important to find out whether or not you need planning permission before any works commence. Thankfully for most homeowners, planning permission for a new driveway isn’t needed, however, you do need to ensure that some conditions are met.

Some instances will require planning permission and that includes the use of impermeable surfacing or non-porous such as ceramic tiles, porcelain paving slabs, asphalt and granite, which is more than 5 m2 in size. Also, if your property is listed or in a specially designated conservation area, planning permission may be required, therefore it’s always best to check with your local authority.
Finally, if you have a shared driveway you need to ensure that your new driveway doesn’t cause inconvenience.

How much does it cost to build a new driveway?

As each home is different and each request for a new driveway differs depending on your needs, there are factors to bear in mind when looking at cost if you have a set budget for the new build. This includes whether it’s a single car parking space or double, the cost per m2 for materials and also what materials are being used.

Gravel is one of the cheapest options followed by tarmac, whilst block paving and resin-bound driveways can be more costly. Also, you’ll need to include costs for the labour to install the driveway for the full picture.

Is tarmac or block paving better?

As with any construction material, there are benefits and disadvantages for all. When looking at whether tarmac or block paving is better for your driveway, firstly you need to ensure that the level base is correct so that it lasts a long time. Tarmac is widely known for its durability on roads in all weathers whilst block paving is a sturdy structure thanks to its design.

As mentioned, block paving is more expensive because the materials are more pricey and the cost of installation will be greater because of the time taken to lay the driveway compared to tarmac which is an efficient material to install. When looking at repairs, block paving is an easy fixture as individual tiles can be replaced while tarmac requires the whole lot to be resurfaced.
Depending on your requirements will help make an informed decision for you and your driveway.

Does adding a driveway add value to your home?

It’s no secret that adding a driveway to your home will help to increase its value. In fact, it can add between 5-10% to the overall price as it allows vehicles to be parked safely outside your home and can enhance the look of your property especially when maintained well and dropped kerbs have been installed properly. Therefore, it’s a worthwhile investment to think about.
